McCamey, in southwestern Upton County, was founded after the discovery of oil nearby. Wildcater George McCamey brought in the Baker No. 1 on September 27, 1925 and the town grew from a siding established on the Orient Railroad to supply the new field.
Many dedicated people have contributed to the history of McCamey and Upton County. They have the gratitude of those who continue to call this community home.
McCamey now has a population of around 1800 people.
McCamey is the "Official Wind Energy Capital of Texas". We now have the annual "Wind Energy Capital of Texas Cook-off" on the third weekend of September.
We are now in the process of building a beautiful Veteran's Memorial Park.
We have completed our new "Serenty Park". It is located downtown, has a beautiful
gazebo.
